Workshop Fabulous Fungi in Bluecity met Ilse Kremer

❤️ Op Valentijnsdag kleurt het BlueCity Lab rood: de kleur van de liefde én de toekomstige kleur van jouw witte kledingstuk. Kom 14 februari naar de speciale Valentijnseditie van de Expeditie BlueCity inclusief een workshop textiel verven met schimmels!

🤿 Duik tijdens deze expeditie in het ecosysteem van onze circulaire voorbeeldstad, ontdek hoe de ondernemers van BlueCity samenwerken met de natuur en ga dit keer ook zelf aan de slag in het BlueCity Lab! Op Valentijnsdag maak je kennis met Ilse Kremer van Fabulous Fungi en ga je onder haar begeleiding flirten met schimmels.

🦠 Ilse Kremer kweekt in het BlueCity Lab verschillende schimmelsoorten om zo meerdere natuurlijke kleuren te creëren. Wanneer de schimmels volgroeid zijn, worden de pigmenten eruit gehaald en gebruikt om stoffen te verven. Benieuwd? Neem een wit kledingstuk of stuk textiel gemaakt van een natuurlijke vezel; katoen, linnen, zijde, bamboe of wol mee en probeer het zelf.

Electives October 2023 – Biobased materials

A new edition of making biobased and therefore biodegradable materials. It is a field in development where you can innovate and design new ideas.

This time, we had some inspiring presentations and students were free to experiment in teams grouped by center of interest.

It has been a very inspiring week.

Explorative Actions – Embodied Research 

Making Leaf Mould  

Workshops for 3 different groups on November 6th, 7th and 13th  from 9.00-10.30 am
By collecting leaf litter, we investigate the difference between leaf litter, composted leaves and GFT (Vegetables, Fruit & Garden waste) compost. What is the effect of the environment on the material, what can you use it for and how and in what can we compost the leaf litter on our rooftop garden? At the same time, we investigate our environment and human behaviour. We meet outside Blaak 10 

On Wednesday 15th November from 5.30-7  all three groups will meet in our Research Station for a joint inventory of observations and collected material and to start with selecting and editing,  and the presentation of sketches (maquettes) of containers for the leaf litter. We meet in WH 0.301

This afternoon is full of interesting speakers and activities. Marie-Joan from the Erasmus MC talks about the challenges of making healthcare and labs more sustainable, go on a walk with Eric for a hands-on session about nature as a source of inspiration for collaboration, or be inspired by Julia from Chainable about producing circular kitchens! And there is much more!

ELECTIVES – DYEING WITH MICROBES

Although humans have used natural colors since the stone age, nowadays the development of chemistry has provided colors with a large variety and stability but with negative effects on the environment.

Bacteria and fungi are natural new sources of pigments to be exploded.

During the Electives, the students got introduced to several practices:

• Shibori
• Bacteria dye
• Fungi dye by Ilse Kremer

Questions that the students reflected on for their assignment:

-What is the hidden cost of life of the current system?

-What does it mean to use life for your pleasure?

-How can we respect life while working in art and design?

Electives – Biomaterials for Designers

This week of Electives with the Living Station will explore biomaterials as a sustainable solution. Creating biomaterials is an innovative and sustainable approach that holds immense potential for addressing environmental challenges and revolutionizing various industries. By utilizing biological resources and processes, designers and researchers are developing materials that are renewable, biodegradable, and have a lower ecological footprint.

Future designers will think about the whole lifecycle of the materials and how they impact the natural world. ​

The Kick-off will give the main information and the students will discuss a particular material that they brought to introduce a personal relation to the choices to make when creating.

Lecture: the non-human

Kas Houtwijk gave a new perspective on the invisible but so present world of microorganisms.

Speculative prototypes were realized after experimenting with some basic recipes.
